The Philippines is the largest Christian country in Asia. With more than 81% of its population Roman Catholic, it is the third country in the world with the largest number of Catholics.
Since the colonial period, religion has been deeply embedded in the local culture and Catholicism the cornerstone of Filipino identity.
Catholicism rapidly spread during the early years of Spanish colonialism. The first Catholic mass in the Philippines was held on March 31, 1521, Easter Sunday, on the island of Limasawa in Southern Leyte. It was conducted by Father Pedro de Valderrama of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition. In the year 2021, the Filipino Catholic community and the Vatican Church celebrated 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines.
The country has produced so far two saints who have been recognized by the Vatican. Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino Saint, was canonized in 1987, then Saint Pedro Calungsod in 2012.
Churches in the Philippines are not only places of worship, they’re also works of art. Some are made of rocks, others are made of coral stones, while one – San Sebastian Church – is made entirely of steel. These centuries-old churches feature grand architectural designs and continue to draw crowds for weekly masses and annual fiestas.
In these modern times, religious sites are built in massive proportions like the Montemaria and Saint Vincent Ferrer Statue, both of which hold world records for being the largest of their kind.
This tour allows you to explore a great number of old churches, minor basilicas, and shrines, as well as holy sites and locations of religious significance. Witness time-honored religious customs, some bordering on the extreme like the San Pedro Cutud Lenten Rites. Beyond sightseeing, this journey of faith enables you to take part in valuable traditions in one the most celebrated religious seasons in the country.

DAY 1 (D) ARRIVE MANILA
Mabuhay! Welcome to Manila – the Philippines’ hyperactive capital that’s home to a man-made beach, the world’s oldest Chinatown, and shopping malls as huge as cities. We begin the spiritual journey with a visit to San Sebastian Church, an all-steel building whose hand-painted interiors were designed to look like stone. It is the first and only of its kind in the country, and one of a handful of such churches in the world. Run by the Order of the Augustinian Recollects, the basilica is a national shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Afterwards, we stop by St. Pauls Superstore where you can choose from the wide selection of products that will help you nurture your Catholic faith. For your welcome dinner, indulge in a spread of mouth-watering Filipino specialties and an engaging performance by The Singing Cooks & Waiters. (Filipinos love to perform and there’s no shortage of talents here. In fact, Canadian musician and record producer David Foster called the Philippines “The Land of Singing Champions” after collaborating with several Filipino singers.) Enjoy your first night in the country and soak up the magnetic local culture.
DAY 2 (BLD) MANILA-TANAY-ANTIPOLO-MANILA
Finish your Arroz Caldo and down that Kapeng Barako. Today we run off to Tanay to visit Regina Rica, a pilgrimage site which features a 22 meter (72 feet) high statue of Our Queen of the Holy Rosary which was designed by sculptor Jose Barcena Jr. Today is Palm Sunday so take out your palaspas (woven palm frond) and lift it up high for the blessing and procession of palms. After hearing Palm Sunday Mass, we navigate to Antipolo – a suburb of Manila located on the slopes of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range and a haven for the arts and relaxation. Lunch will be served at Luljetta’s Place amidst a mountain resort setting with a commanding view of the majestic Laguna de Bay and Manila skyline. Afterwards we swerve to Antipolo Cathedral where the Marian image, brought from Mexico in 1626, is believed to be miraculous in granting safe travels, prosperous lives, and healing the sick. In June 2022, the Vatican raised Antipolo Cathedral's status to an international shrine – the first such designation in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Yippee!
DAY 3 (BLD) MANILA-TAGAYTAY
Wave goodbye to Manila and say hello to Tagaytay. Located on a ridge 685 meters (2,247 feet) above Taal Lake, Tagaytay is known for its cool and breezy weather. It also offers alternating views of lush pineapple and coffee plantations and the serene Taal Lake and Taal Volcano, known as the world’s smallest active volcano. Our first agenda in Tagaytay: The Pink Sisters Chapel & Convent. The Sister-Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration run this Convent. They are popularly called the Pink Sisters because of the pink habit they don, which is said to symbolize the love and joy of the Holy Spirit. A color chosen by its founder, Saint Arnold Janssen. Countless devotees attest that their prayers were granted through the intervention of the Pink Sisters who each take turn to adore the Blessed Sacrament and keep a prayer vigil 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Are your prayer requests ready? After lunch, we pop into Our Lady of Lourdes Parish which was consecrated in 2008 as homage to the 150th anniversary of the apparition of our Blessed Mother in Lourdes, France. This church is being administered by the Capuchin Order of the Franciscan Minors, the congregation under which Padre Pio belonged to. We end the day with a fabulous feast which includes Bulalo (Beef Bone Marrow Soup), Lechon Kawali (Crispy Fried Pork Belly), Fried Boneless Bangus (Fried Milkfish), and so much more. Nurture the spirit… Nourish the tummy!
DAY 4 (BLD) TAGAYTAY-TAAL-TAGAYTAY
Wakey wakey! Today we venture to Taal, a small town richly endowed with well-preserved colonial structures and a proud heritage including the fine art of embroidery that's being kept alive by the women in the community. Our first stop is the Taal Basilica. Dubbed as the largest Catholic church in Asia, the Basilica of St. Martin de Tours – more commonly known as Taal Basilica – is an astounding landmark that sits atop a hill right at the center of the town. With a length of 96 meters (315 feet) and a width of 45 meters (147 feet), the Basilica is a prominent structure that can be seen even from a great distance. After lunch, we make a bolt for Our Lady of Caysasay Shrine. The Marian image housed in this chapel was caught in the fishing net of a local resident who was fishing in the nearby Pansipit River in 1603. Passed on to a caretaker, it was later discovered that the image would mysteriously disappear in the evening and reappear in the morning. One day, the image did not return for a long time. Years later, the image was found lying in a cave near a spring where the image of the Virgin Mary was reflected in the spring water. Now called the Sta. Lucia Well, the water coming from the spring is believed to have miraculous properties especially after a local who had lived all her life with a terrible eye disease was healed in front of many eyewitnesses. Do you believe in miracles?

DAY 5 (BLD) TAGAYTAY-BATANGAS CITY-STO. TOMAS-TAGAYTAY
Today, we set off to the coastal city of Batangas to visit Montemaria, a five-hectare pilgrimage site which features a grand image of the Virgin Mary on top of a hill. Called Mother of All Asia - Tower of Peace, the statue faces Batangas Bay and offers breathtaking views. With a height of 98.15 meters (322 feet), it is the world’s tallest statue of the Virgin Mary. Take your meditation to the next level while braving the Miracle Walk, a glass walkway suspended 45 meters (147 feet) above the ground. In the afternoon we continue to Sto. Tomas and bounce to Padre Pio Shrine, a religious complex dedicated to Saint Padre Pio, known to be a Miraculous Saint with stories of healing and miracles. Explore, contemplate, and pray as we make our way through the salakot-shaped Church, the Holy Water Sanctuary, Sanctuary of the Relics of St. Padre Pio, Chapel of Lights, Mary Mother of Mercy Belfry, and many more. It’s a mini theme park for the faithful!
DAY 6 (BLD) TAGAYTAY-MANILA-CLARK
Sling your luggage into the van. We tumble back to Manila. Are you ready for Visita Iglesia? It’s time to go church-hopping… Baclaran Church (National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help), Malate Church (Our Lady of Remedies Parish), Manila Cathedral (The Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception), San Agustin Church (Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation and Cincture or the Immaculate Conception Parish), Sta. Cruz Church (Our Lady of the Pillar Parish Church and Archdiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament), Binondo Church (Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz), and finally Quiapo Church (Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene). They say seven is a lucky number. We then skedaddle to Clark where, after enduring a long and tiring day, a comfortable bed is waiting to be your best buddy.

DAY 7 (BLD) CLARK-SAN FERNANDO-GUAGUA-BACOLOR-CLARK
Onward! Today, we’ve got our GPS set for the City of San Fernando to witness the Holy Week traditions of flagellation and crucifixion, known locally as Penitensya. Penitents consider these acts to be mortification of the flesh, and they undertake these to ask forgiveness for sins, to fulfil a panata (vow), or to express gratitude for answered prayers. Participants whip their bloodied backs with bamboo sticks and walk the streets barefoot or crawl across hot pavements as part of their penitence. Another major highlight which shouldn’t be missed is the reenactment of Christ's Passion and Death which culminates with the actual nailing of penitents on a wooden cross. After lunch, we flee to Betis Church. Dubbed as the “Sistine Chapel of the Philippines” because of its grandeur design, this church features murals on the ceiling which were painted with frescoes and trompe l’oeil artwork originally done by Macario Ligon, then repainted by Victor Ramos. The main altar boasts of elaborate designs, with statues at the retablo and angels on top of the columns. Later on, we sashay to the nearby Bacolor Church. Originally standing 12 meters (39 feet) high, lahar flow from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 reduced Bacolor Church’s facade to half its original height. The original door, which has been buried by lahar, can no longer be seen. What used to be windows are now the main entrance to the church. This house of prayer can’t be knocked down easily! The dark evening comes to life with the Procession of the Santo Entierro or the image of the dead Christ and other saints connected with the Passion of Christ. The procession begins with hundreds of pasos wearing black cassocks and white mozzettas, their faces covered by black veils, as a sign of mourning. This is followed by rows of elegant, grand, and elaborate carrozas (floats) surrounded by devotees in deep and thoughtful prayers. It’s truly moving!

Lahar flow from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 reduced Bacolor Church’s facade into half its original height.

The Statue of Saint Vincent Ferrer in Bayambang is taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Sao Paolo.
DAY 8 (BLD) CLARK-BAYAMBANG-NAMPICUAN-CLARK
Load up on breakfast and get ready to venture further up north to the municipality of Bayambang to invade the colossal Saint Vincent Ferrer Statue. The statue reaches a height of 50.23 meters (164 feet) and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the tallest bamboo sculpture in the world. Saint Vincent Ferrer is the patron saint of construction workers, builders, plumbers, and is also the patron saint of the town of Bayambang. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant then we head to the Sanctuary of the Holy Face Nampicuan. The Holy Veil of Manoppello enthroned in Nampicuan is a replica of the "One and Only, Unique and Most Precious Relic of the Resurrection" kept for centuries at the Basilica del Santo Volto in Manoppello, Italy. The replica given by the Rector of the Basilica del Volto Santo is the only replica enshrined outside the Basilica del Volto Santo. The Veil is not the cloth that a woman named Veronica used to wipe the face of Jesus on His way to the Cross; rather it is the cloth that was put on the face of the dead Jesus when He was buried, in accordance with Jewish tradition.
DAY 9 (BLD) CLARK-ANGELES CITY-MANILA
Today, we need to wake up bright and early then roll into the Immaculate Conception Parish in Angeles City to witness the Easter Salubong, a tradition that reenacts Jesus meeting His Mother after rising from the dead. The Salubong begins with two separate dawn processions... one for the risen Christ and another one for the Blessed Mother. The procession ends in front of the church, with the statues of Jesus and Mary "meeting" on Easter, surrounded by hundreds of joyful parishioners. After hearing Easter Sunday Mass, we slide back to the hotel for breakfast then free time until check out time. In the afternoon we glide back to Manila and access major city sites including the Manila American Memorial and The Fountain at Okada Manila. Complete your pasalubong shopping at Tesoro’s Philippine Handicrafts. You came, you saw, you shop! Then what better way to end the day than with a buffet dinner of delectable Filipino & Spanish cuisine at Barbara’s Heritage Restaurant. Keep your eyes open for the engaging cultural show. Tip: Find the rhythm so your feet won’t hit the bamboo poles during the Tinikling dance.
DAY 10 (B) MANILA-DEPARTURE
Breakfast at the hotel then free time until check out. What a journey it’s been! Smile, you’re going home with new friends to miss, tons of photos to show, loads of stories to tell, and, more importantly, a deeper connection to your faith.
